What is needed now is a strong public-private partnership to create sustainable, independent transportation options for older people across America. Senator Collins (R-ME) has made the public portion possible, first through her stewardship of specific language in Section 416 of the Older Americans Act (42 U.S.C. 3032e) to "provide funds to develop innovative approaches to improving access by older individuals to transportation services" and through her current $5 million appropriation request, co-sponsored in the House of Representatives by Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro (D-CT).
This public funding will serve as seed funding — start-up capital — to enable community-based organizations like ITNAmerica® to match public monies with private funding from local communities, leveraging both sources for the greater good of older Americans. Ultimately, these groups will be sustained at the community level, and will no longer need public funding.
Stand up and be counted in this effort.
